Understanding HVAC Systems
Our HVAC experts can explain the five main types of HVAC systems available to you.
Split Systems
A split system can include either an exterior heat pump or air conditioner paired with a fan coil or gas furnace installed inside your home. Heated or cooled air moves through the building by way of ductwork.
Hybrid Heat Systems
Also known as a dual fuel system, hybrid systems give you greater control over temperatures when your heating source switches from the heat pump to the furnace or boiler. As with split systems, hybrid units have components located both inside and outside. Additionally, they can both heat and cool the air.
Geothermal Heat Pumps
Because these use the relatively constant temperature in the earth as a heat exchange source, geothermal heat pumps are able to heat and cool the air efficiently.
Ductless Split Systems
These appear in home additions and other areas where ductwork would be challenging to install. They link individual room units to an outdoor compressor. The advantage of ductless split systems – also known as mini-splits – is that they allow separate control over individual rooms or spaces.
Packaged Systems
All the HVAC system components in the packaged system are in one metal cabinet installed on the ground or on the roof of a home or commercial building. Packaged systems are space savers.
